Richard has been designing gardens professionally for over 10 years.

Following his degree he trained in Garden Design at Merrist Wood College in Surrey and then spent seven years as Arne Maynard’s right-hand man, working on projects as diverse as London town gardens to remodelling country estates, both in the UK and internationally. During this time Richard was closely involved in creating a sustainable garden for the Wild Fowl and Wetland Trust in Barnes, south-west London and two gardens for the English Heritage Gardens Competition and the Gardens Illustrated magazine sponsored garden ‘Evolution’ at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2000 which went on to secure a Gold Medal and the coveted Best In Show award.

When designing, Richard likes to begin by putting structure into the garden, be it with hedges, walls, trained fruit trees or an avenue of trees. These divide the garden into areas of manageable human scale, defining spaces and giving each area a purpose whilst providing shelter, varying points of interest and framing views; they also help hold the garden together through the winter months. This structure is then softened with bulbs, herbaceous borders, shrubs and roses so that with the advent of spring & summer the excitement of the budding flowers adds a new, altogether softer dimension to the garden.

Current commissions include large country gardens for clients in Surrey and Oxfordshire, another for a Grade I listed home in Norfolk, a large garden for a new house in North London and a roof terrace for a private bank in Central London.
